Herman Van Rompuy, on the announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI: I deeply respect the decision

Herman_Van_RompuyPresident of the European Union, Herman van Rompuy, said in a brief statement that he ”deeply respects the decision of Pope Benedict XVI, especially since it is not in line with tradition.”

He also added that ”His pontificate has been short but very difficult.”

“I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to the adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” said Pope Benedict, referring to the tradition that dates the papacy back to Saint Peter, 2,000 years ago.
